President’s Fall Address

President GonzalezIn his annual Fall Address on Thursday, Aug. 28, Sac State President Alexander Gonzalez introduced the University Strategic Plan. Goals include enhancing student learning and success; fostering innovative teaching, scholarship and research; and strengthening and enriching the region through community engagement. The President also gave an update on faculty hiring, enrollment, fundraising highlights, and shared campus improvements such as the new, green bike paths. At the conclusion of his address, the President announced that he will retire at the end of the 2014-15 academic year.

Sacramento State footballGarrett Safron completed 17-of-25 passes for 251 yards and five touchdowns to lead Sac State to a 49-13 win at Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. Darnell Sankey also led the team with 10 tackles and returned an interception for a touchdown.

Orr Scholarship inspires business students

OrrScholarships weren’t much of a consideration for Dane Willis when he embarked on his college career. He excelled academically, but his parents gave him plenty of financial support, until tragedy struck. Willis’ father suffered a fatal stroke last year and Willis suddenly found himself struggling to afford school as he entered Sac State’s Business Honors program last fall.

Nirvana ZaherIt took a bold leap for Nirvana Zaher ’06 (Kinesiology) to leave her hometown of Cairo, Egypt at age 16 to become a student-athlete at Sac State. Her gallant spirit hasn’t dissipated over the past 12 years. These days, Zaher is pioneering a fitness movement gaining momentum in her home country.
