Generous giving boosts scholarships, programs


Sacramento State received more than $1.4 million in private financial support in the second and third quarters (Oct. 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013) of the 2012-13 fiscal year. Gifts went to support a variety of programs and scholarship funds, including those in the School of Nursing, Athletics, the College of Health and Human Services and the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

Highlights included:

  • A gift from professor emeritus John Panneton in support of the Panneton Family Criminal Justice Scholarship in the College of Health and Human Services.

  • Dignity Health continued its support of the expansion of the School of Nursing in its new facility in Folsom Hall.

  • Barbara Souza established an endowed scholarship in memory of her daughter Hilsia Souza ’95 (Family & Consumer Sciences), benefitting a fraternity or sorority member seeking a degree in nursing.

  • A gift from Steve and Ginny ’76 (Liberal Studies) Patterson to establish the Steve and Ginny Patterson Scholarship endowment, benefitting student-athletes. The gift honors Sac State football coach Marshall Sperbeck. They also provided significant support to Athletic Director Terry Wanless for the athletics program.

  • The Marda Lee West Trust continued its support of scholarships in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Professor Marda West taught in the biological sciences department.
