Mattos to receive President’s Medal

Former Hornet football coach Bob Mattos (’65, Physical Education) will be awarded the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service at the College of Health and Human Services commencement ceremony on May 24. President Alexander Gonzalez made the announcement that “Coach” would receive the honor at last month’s Distinguished Service Awards. Mattos has the most wins of any coach in the history of the Sac State football program and is in the Hornet Football Hall of Fame. He has also raised nearly half a million dollars for the new Edythe and Eli Broad Fieldhouse.

The Alumni Association will present two upcoming Breakfast Club events, in Sacramento and Rocklin.

  • June 6, Alejandra Bologna, Consul General of Mexico on “The View from Mexico: Immigration and the Effects of NAFTA,” 7:30 a.m., Sac State Alumni Center

Jazz Singers win DownBeat award

If Sacramento State’s Jazz Singers were a Cole Porter song, it would be “You’re the Top.” The group has been named co-winners of the 2008 Best Collegiate Vocal Jazz Group award by DownBeat magazine, the premier publication for jazz music.

Alum is new men’s basketball coach

Brian Katz (’80, English) was named the head men’s basketball coach at Sac State. A native of Sacramento, Katz’s extensive basketball resumé includes a 32-year career as a basketball coach at the NCAA Div. I, junior college and high school levels.
